The story goes like this. I'm at work late at night, my wife is getting the kids ready for bed, I have a moment of sadness that I'm missing my kids. I can call and chat but that's too disruptive for both sides. I can text but that won't be seen for a while. Instead I want to signal to my family that I'm thinking about them without it breaking into their nighttime routine. That's were the Thinking Of You (TOY) boxes come in.
The TOY boxes are designed to be a simply way of indicating that I'm thinking about them (and visa versa). At rest sentimental items are displayed. When a message comes in that I'm thinking of them, it animates those items. Some are rotated, some pulsate, some are just lit, and some actually display an actual message. One box is at my work, the other is at home in a conspicuous place.
This is a work in progress. The first cut was built just to vet the concept and the communication between the boxes. I submitted the entire project to Instructables. It includes build instructions, hardware list, and all the code. But as this is a work in progress, I'll continue to update this page with the latest designs.
